. >> update on the response to hurricane sandy. >> afternoon, everybody. i will be brief because i figure you got more questions. some of the highlights from the last couple of days. as of this morning, around 6:00 a.m., and we will have numbers later this afternoon be looked at you, but 317,000 folks have registered in the three states for individual assistance. and a total of -- is three had a 20 million for the three states. the yesterday northeaster had impacts appeared in many cases precautionary measures were taken to shut down operations. there was concern about that, but it was based on the forecast the day before when decisions were made, said those were done in coordination with state and local officials. power outages increased slightly. power outages due to the nor'easter did increase the number of customers without power, and as of this morning, about 42,000 people in addition to those who have lost power from sandy are reported out. that number is down from the original impacts of the northeastern, but we continue to cede power restoration. t

this town got totally devastated from sandy. they're already starting to flood here and this rain has been coming down here. this is a business district, ocean avenue. every one of the businesses was destroyed by sandy. there are 1500 people in this town and they say every home was affected in one way or the other. minor flooding all the way to major structural damage. this is only adding insult to injury especially for them. right behind me or behind the camera, turning around right now, that's a 20-foot berm they're trying to build, trying to finish it off before the worst of the storm hits. they're hoping that's going to protect them from the ocean on that side. the thing about sea bright which makes it vulnerable to nor'easters is that -- and rain storms like this, it's only three blocks wide. we have the ocean right here. right past that sand berm you can't see. swing it back around, sorry if we're getting you, that's the river down there. so they get flooded on literally both sides. and they're worried this nor'easter is g

every storm is different as we learned with sandy and all the other big hurricanes that have hit this country. we're not dealing with anything too bad today. if you have travel plans on the east coast, pay attention because as you go to work, no issues. but as you come home, you could be doing it in the snow in a few spots. we're going to watch temperatures closely because notice how cold it is up there in albany, hartford and boston. in any snow does fall, it probably wouldn't accumulate on the pavement. still hovering around 40. so whatever falls should melt throughout the morning and especially during the afternoon. here's the winter radar. this is our little weak storm. the white shows you where the snow is. the pink is the mix. and then where we show you the green, that's where the rain is. washington, d.c., starting heavier echoes. this is probably hitting the ground, maybe a little sleet mixed in, too, western maryland. as this all translates this afternoon right over the top of the philadelphia to new york city area, that's where we could see minor accumulations. we're not tal
